Jo Steer is an experienced and passionate learning practitioner and wellbeing expert, with a decade of experience in both primary and secondary schools within West Yorkshire.
At the primary level, Jo taught in year 4 to 6, as well as being a Leader in Learning, Collaborative Learning Champion, Humanities Coordinator and Acting SENDco. Moving into secondary education, she lead an alternative core curriculum to SEND children who were not ‘secondary-ready’ and was the coordinator of a unique department for mainstream KS3 students, based on developing life skills such as empathy, teamwork, resilience, attention etc.
Looking to take on a new challenge and ‘spread the message’, Jo left her secondary role in July 2017, and soon after transformed her educational blog, skillswithfills.com, into a business, Skills with Frills Education Ltd.
The business initially began as an upgraded alternative to supply cover for schools; a means by which schools could cover lessons, minus the last-minute planning from staff, and ensure quality, long-lasting learning for their students based on the same range of life-skills Jo had spent years teaching.
As a life-long anxiety sufferer and advocate of mindfulness, cognitive behaviour therapy and self-help, it’s hardly surprising that wellbeing and mindfulness have organically become a key part of everything that the business offers – the frills to our skills – a mindfulness-based approach to learning and life. See Jo’s wellbeing-themed articles in TES here.
Alongside her teaching qualifications, Jo is also trained in:
– Mindfulness for 7-11 year olds (British Mindfulness Institute)
– Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (British Mindfulness Institute)
– CBT Essentials (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) with the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT Accreditation L2)
– Level 3 Forest Schools Practitioner (Archimedes Earth – Forest School Education)
– ‘Yogakidz’ teaching, listed in the UK teachers’ directory here.
Jo is currently delivering a range of different services to infants, junior and secondary schools within West Yorkshire, from weekly ‘supply cover‘ in which one class, many classes or many groups are taught wellbeing/mindfulness-themed lessons, to one-off Mindfulness Masterclasses and workshops, taught as a one-off to classes, year-groups or schools.
Her unique knowledge, training and experience; her enthusiasm for student-lead, skill-based learning; her need to empower, motivate, calm and care for children, altogether provide an enriching classroom experience for your students.
