About Jo

Jo Steer is an experienced and passionate learning practitioner with a decade of experience in both primary and secondary schools within West Yorkshire.

Taking this experience into secondary education, Jo then moved into a role as a ‘Primary to Secondary Transition teacher’, teaching a alternative core curriculum to SEND children who were not ‘secondary-ready.’ She also coordinated a unique department for all Year 7/8 pupils, based on developing life skills.

In creating and delivering specific skill-focused lessons; through pushing children to grow their resilience, attention, independence, confidence, collaboration and much more; Jo began to feel that other schools and students would benefit from practising these same skills. So with this in mind, she left her role in July 2017…though she did stay a week later to lead an action-packed Summer School for upcoming year 7 students.

Over the following months, vague ideas became tangible plans and in January, 2018, Skills with Frills Education Ltd. launched as a business, offering skill-based learning opportunities to schools in Yorkshire.

Jo’s CPD has continued to expand and she’s now also trained in:
– Mindfulness for 7-11 year olds (British Mindfulness Institute)
– CBT Essentials (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) with the Association for Psychological Therapies (APT Accreditation Level 2)
– ‘Yogakidz’ teaching, listed in the UK teachers’ directory here.

Jo is deeply passionate about children’s mental health, so it’s hardly surprising that wellbeing and mindfulness have organically become a key part of everything that the business offers; the frills to our skills; a mindfulness approach to learning and life.

She is currently delivering a number of different services to schools within West Yorkshire, from weekly ‘supply cover‘ with pre-planned learning experiences, to one-off Mindfulness Masterclasses, repeated across classes within schools. Her unique knowledge, training and experience; her enthusiasm for student-lead, skill-based learning; her ability to quickly connect with and motivate children, allow her to provide an enriching classroom experience for your students.
