Jo is also working through Mindfulness and CBT strategies with children and young adults in the home.
According to the BMI, the advantages of regular practice for children can include:
- Increased sense of calmness, relaxation, self-acceptance and overall self-esteem
- Increased working memory, planning, organisation and ability to orient attention
- Increased quality and length of sleep
- Decreased negative affect/emotions, including test anxiety
- Decreased ADHD-related behaviours such as hyperactivity and impulsivity
- Fewer conduct and anger management problems
We usually recommend a basic course of 6 sessions, in which students are taught the essentials of what mindfulness is, how it can help and how to actually do it. We cover a range of informal and formal mindfulness techniques and meditations, tailored towards the students’ individual requirements and needs.
Jo is keen to mix in elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, in a way which naturally complements mindfulness practice. Students are taught to let go of what they can’t control in any given situation, whilst gaining a firmer grip on what they can.
By changing our relationship with breath, thoughts, emotions and attention in general, we can unlock a toolbox for happiness that was hiding inside of us all along.
Though this isn’t a counselling or a therapy session, this kind of coaching can certainly feel therapeutic for students, in both the short and longer-term. Students are given weekly homework to reinforce ideas and techniques discussed in the session. As with all we do at Skills with Frills, the aim is that students are given information and skills that they can use independently long after the session is over.
